Everywhere you drive around Itria Valley (and other places) in central Puglia you will see the trulli, this strange building with a conical roof. Many are ruins, no more than a pile of rocks with a hole in the middle, but many have been renovated to more than their former glory with the addition of all mod cons, converting them to either a holiday retreat, permanent home, shop, bar, restaurant or accommodation.

Originally built for peasant accommodation or shelters they come in many sizes, some with just 1 cone and others with multiple. All constructed without mortar or cement, they match perfectly the dry stone walls in the surrounding fields, although many nowadays have been painted white.

They certainly make a novel home and are increasingly popular with UK buyers, hence the prices are creeping up. Prices vary according to condition with total ruins going for a song, while impressively renovated ones can fetch hundreds of thousands, depending on the quality and location. There are strict regulations on what you can and cannot do, so if you decide to purchase one check it out first. They invariably come with a very large garden or piece of land, sometimes many acres.

The best place to view many trulli is the small town of Alberobello, with over 1000 apparently (I haven't counted them) many converted to gift shops, bars and restaurants to cater for all the tourists that visit. If you are in the area this should be one of the "must sees" on your list of things to do.

A nicely rebuilt and decorated trulli with the addition of a swimming pool will command a very good rental income though, so in most cases it can be seen as a good investment. Do not accept the price it is offered for though, make a good offer and watch the price tumble.
