Tourism is a growing industry in Puglia due mainly to the advent of cheap and fast travel to the region by the budget airlines. Mainly visited, even today by just the northern Italians escaping to the sun and in many cases their own holiday home away from the big cities. But especially the Brits are getting a foothold by buying the very cheap villas and apartments scattered throughout the area.

This is a place to visit for a peaceful vacation exploring wonderful towns (many with historic old quarters) many perched on hill or cliff top locations, overlooking the coast or miles of farmland, sometimes covered in olive trees or vineyards. If you keep out of the few touristy areas and eat where the locals dine, you will excellent food at very reasonable prices. McDonalds are few and far between, but pop into a local Pizzerria for a delicious, large freshly made one for about 4 euros, expect to wait about 30 minutes though, no fast food here!
