Basic details of the larger towns and cities in Puglia can found below, these are the places with a population of about 20,000 inhabitants or more.

Acquaviva delle Fonti

  • Acquaviva delle Fonti is a small Cathedral town of just over 21,000 people about 15 miles south of Bari. As the name suggests it has local springs which give rise to a mainly agricultural economy.

Alberobello

  • Alberobello, with just over 10,000 inhabitants is small but has a peerless attraction in its authentic trulli neighbourhoods that receive a flood of visitors from around Europe, is an inland town on the Murgia plateau about 35 miles south-west of Bari.

Altamura

  • Altamura is a large town by Puglian standards, with a population estimated at 70,000 people, approximately 30 miles inland and south west of Bari. It is famous for its high defensive walls and cathedral.

Andria

  • Andria is one of the biggest cities in Puglia with a population of about 100,000 people and is situated 30 miles north west of Bari toward Foggia. There are lots of interesting places to visit there including the Castel del Monte (see Puglia Historic Attractions), Ducal Palace and fine Cathedral.

Bari

  • Bari is the capital and largest City in Puglia with a pop. of roughly 300,000 inhabitants. It is a mainly industrial town now with a large port and international airport. The main visitor attractions include the Castle Svevo, Cathedral and the old quarter.

Barletta

  • Barletta is a coastal town of 90+ thousand people about 35 miles north and west of Bari. Its most famous tourist attraction is the Colossus of Barletta a gigantic bronze statue from the Roman era.

Bisceglie

  • Bisceglie is a town of fifty plus thousand inhabitants on the coast to the north west of Bari. The main attractions for foreign visitors are probably the Castle of Bisceglie and so called Norman tower.

Bitonto

  • Bitonto is a few miles to the west of and inland from the capital Bari, with a population a little over 50,000. Lots to see and do, with fine churches, Cathedral, castle plus the old town walls.

Brindisi

  • Brindisi is a coastal, port city with a growing international airport of less than 90,000 people. With a couple of castles, Cathedral and various Roman attractions, there are plenty of things to visit.

Canosa di Puglia

  • Canosa di Puglia is one of the oldest towns in Puglia, yet still only has a population of less than 32,000 people. Lots to see including ancient hypogeum (underground rooms), castle, towers, Cathedral and Roman relics (Arches and even a bridge).

Casarano

  • Casarano is an agricultural town in the far south of Puglia about 20 miles due south of Lecce with a population of 20,000.

Ceglie Messapica

  • Ceglie Messapica is a town inland from Ostuni with a population of about 20,000 people which is about half what it was in Roman times! It has a delightful old quarter complete with castle.

Cerignola

  • Cerignola is thirty plus miles south east of Foggia with a pop. of less than sixty thousand. Visitor attractions include a 13th century tower, cathedral and churches.

Cisternino

  • Cisternino is an inland town in the province of Brindisi with a population of twelve thousand, renowned for its ancient centre complete with a palace or 2 and medieval gatehouse, that straddles a hill, 14 km from the Adriatic coast.

Conversano

  • Conversano is an inland town (about 5 miles to the coast) of less than 25,000 people several miles south-east of Bari. With local history going back to the iron age, there is plenty to see there such as the local castle, cathedral, monastery and megalithic walls.

Copertino

  • Copertino can be located just a couple of miles south and west of Lecce in southern Puglia, with a pop. of approximately 27,000 who are mostly involved in the local agriculture. There is a massive castle there that is open daily.

Corato

  • Corato is north west of Bari, near to the National Park Murgia and has a population of 45,000 people. Most local tourism is centred on the national park although there is an attractive old quarter.

Fasano

  • Fasano is to be found halfway between Bari and Brindisi, just a few miles from the sea on the coastal plain. It has a population of less than 40,000 people. The most notable local attraction is the ZooSafari.

Foggia

  • Foggia is the capital city of Foggia Province, with a population of nearly 200,000 inhabitants. A popular attraction is the Passo di Corvo, an archaeological site from the 4th century BC.

Francavilla Fontana

  • Francavilla Fontana is an inland town about 20 miles from both Brindisi and Taranto with a pop. of over 35,000 people. It's most famous landmark is the impressive, Imperial Castle in the heart of the town.

Galatina

  • Further south than Lecce at the tip of the heel is Galatina, a town of more than 25,000 people. With a palace, churches and museum you will be sure to find things of interest here.

Gallipoli

  • Gallipoli is a small town on the south west coast of Puglia, with only 21,000 inhabitants. The old town situated on a small island is a very popular attraction, along with the castle.

Ginosa

  • Ginosa is a small town in delightful countryside with local history stretching back to pre Roman and Greek times.

Gioia del Colle

  • Gioia del Colle is a small agricultural town with about 27,000 people, situated just off the main Bari - Taranto road. try a visit to the "Castello di Gioia del Colle" and the nearby archaeological site of Monte Sannace with remains from the 4th century BC.

Giovinazzo

  • Giovinazzo is a beautiful town on the coast a few miles north from Bari with a population of approximately 20,000. Local attractions include the cathedral and Palace Saraceno.

Gravina in Puglia

  • Gravina in Pugliais on the edge of the Murgia Park with a pop. of over 40,000. Lots to see apart from the park including castle ruins, cathedral and a couple of museums.

Grottaglie

  • Grottaglie is just 15 miles from Taranto in a ravine strewn area famous for its caves and scenery, and has a pop. of 31,000. It is dominated by the huge Castle Episcopio.

Lecce

  • Lecce the capital of the province of the same name, with a population of just short of 100,000 people. It's long history ensures there is loads to see including churches a plenty, cathedral, convent, Roman amphitheatre, palace and castle.

Lucera

  • Lucerais just a short drive north west of Foggia with 35,000 inhabitants. Sights include the roman amphitheatre, cathedral, and castle.

Manduria

  • Manduria is 20 miles south east of Taranto and has a pop. of 31,000. Popular local attractions include the old Jewish Quarter and the archaelogical park "Mura Messapiche" with ruins stretching back to the 5th century BC.

Manfredonia

  • Manfredonia is a coastal resort town in the north of Puglia about 20 miles from Foggia, with nearly 60,000 local inhabitants. Manfredonia sights include the harbour, Gargano Park and ferries to the Tremiti Islands.

Martina Franca

  • Martina Franca is a country town of just 16,000 people 10 miles south of Fasano with an attractive old sector.

Massafra

  • Massafra is a small town 10 miles to the north and east of Taranto with a total population of 32,000 famed for the local ravines and cave dwellings.

Mesagne

  • Mesagne is 10 miles south east of Brindisi on the Appian Way and has a pop. of less than 30,000 people. Visitor attractions include the Castle and its Museum.

Modugno

  • Modugno is just a few miles east of Bari with a current population of 36,000 people.

Mola di Bari

  • Mola di Bari is a fishing port 7 miles south east of Bari with 25,000 inhabitants. Popular for all boating activities.

Molfetta

  • Molfetta is a city of 60,000 people 15 miles further up the coast from Bari. Popular for tourists and wind surfers with nice beaches, churches, a tower or two, and a Neolithic site.

Monopoli

  • Monopoli is a popular coastal resort town with over 50,000 inhabitants. This is a rather nice stretch of coast with many coves and beaches, or you can visit the large Charles 5th Castle built up to the waters edge.

Nardo

  • Nardo is 12 miles south west of Lecce and 7 or 8 miles from Gallipoli. It has a local pop. of just over 30,000 people. An outstanding example of a baroque style town.

Ostuni

  • Ostuni is a city of 30+ thousand just a few miles inland from the coast and 25 miles north of Brindisi. Approaching from the coastal plain it is visible for miles as it sits on a large hill position with the old walls and historic centre gleaming white.

Palo del Colle

  • Palo del Colleis 10 miles inland from Bari with 20,000 inhabitants and a nice old quarter.

Polignano a Mare

  • A very attractive resort on the coast a few miles south of Bari, Polignano a Mare is famed for its old quarter which is perfect example of the medieval town.

Putignano

  • Putignano is a small town 15 miles inland from Monopoli, with a 30,000 pop. Famous for the Palazzo del Bali, the palace of the Knights of Malta, large caves and its carnival.

Ruvo di Puglia

  • Ruvo di Puglia is 15 miles due east of Bari and has a pop. of 25,000 people. Noted for its Romanesque Cathedral and museum.

San Giovanni Rotondo

  • San Giovanni Rotondo is a town on the edge of the Gargano National Park of 25,000 people. Visit the circular tower museum.

San Severo

  • San Severo is a small city of 55,000 people, 15 miles north of Foggia known for elegant churches and a museum with greek and roman relics.

San Vito dei Normanni

  • San Vito dei Normanni is a farming town 10 miles or so east and inland of Brindisi with a pop. of just 20,000 people.

Santeramo in Colle

  • Santeramo in Colle town is 20 miles south and a little east of Bari with a pop. of over 25,000 surrounded by natural forests.

Taranto

  • Taranto is a large city on the south west coast of Puglia with over 200,000 inhabitants. Famous for its natural harbour, the tarantula spider, museums, castle and much more.

Terlizzi

  • Terlizzi is a town about 15 miles inland and east of Bari with a pop. of about 28,000 people.

Trani

  • Trani is a port town about 25 miles up the coast from Bari with a pop. of over 50,000 inhabitants. It has a couple of palaces, castle, cathedral and museum to visit.

Triggiano

  • Triggiano is a small town south east of Bari (about 5 miles) with a pop. of less than 31,000.
