Matera Puglia
A town of less than 65,000 people situated approximately 50 miles north west of Taranto with a wealth of history dating back to the bronze age.
It's fame has spread far and wide thanks to its amazing old town, the "Sassi" which spills over the edge of a large ravine incorporating a myriad of dwellings and cave houses, a few of which are still inhabited.
Once you arrive in the town just follow the signs to the Sassi where you will suddenly start descending a narrow road paved with local stone. If you are travelling off peak or mid-week keep going right down to the bottom then turn left and follow the road around the old town, if it is busy then park where you can and enjoy the walk. The stone pavements, steps, and road are fairly uneven so leave the stilettos at home ladies!
Guides are available (some English speaking) but they are not essential to enjoy your visit. The many vistas will have you snapping away as you wander around, with breath taking views across the "Gravina", historical cave dwellings and churches. Because of its uniqueness it has been used as a location for various biblical movies including Mel Gibson's "The Passion of Christ".
