If you haven't got your own satnav (don't forget in many cases it will need an extra European map added) most companies can offer one to rent for a small fee, a small price to pay to guide you through an often confusing road system in a strange country on the "wrong" side of the road.

Another tip is to pre-book (if possible) any baby or child seats that will need.

Don't forget your full driving license (photo card and paper) although I have never been asked for the paper section outside the UK, you will not want to be caught out! A passport is essential too, but we can assume you have that as you have already arrived in Italy.

You may want to consider the "extra" insurance (once you've seen the Italians drive and park, you will understand why) to cover you for the sometimes large excesses for an accident or theft.

Remember don't try to match the local driving (I was overtaken on the motorway recently by a scooter and I wasn't hanging around), relax, take your time and enjoy yourself, you are on holiday aren't you?

Although the Italians seem to just abandon their cars anywhere, beware in some places you may get towed away!

I'm not aware of any cars without air conditioning but double check, you will need it in the summer.
